SHA-256 Generator

Calculate SHA-256 hashes of text, files or decoded bytes in your browser — free, with no sign-up, and your input never leaves your device. Enter text, select a file or decode bytes, then copy the digest or compare it with an expected SHA-256 value.

Input source

Empty input is valid. Spaces and Unicode are preserved; no BOM is added.

Questions

How long is the result?

SHA-256 produces 32 bytes: 64 hexadecimal characters. Base64 represents the same digest bytes.

What input is hashed?

Input source: Text / Files / Encoded bytes. Empty input is valid. Spaces and Unicode are preserved; no BOM is added. Text encoding: UTF-8, UTF-16LE, UTF-16BE; Line endings: LF / CRLF. Any file type is accepted. The original bytes are hashed, not extracted document text or the filename. Files are processed one at a time in 1 MiB chunks.

How does verification work?

Select the expected algorithm and encoding explicitly. Comparison uses decoded bytes and checks the exact length. Changing output format or expected value does not reread a file.

Are my inputs saved or uploaded?

Text, files, keys and hashes stay in this tab. Nothing you enter is uploaded or saved.

Is this tool free?

Yes. This tool is free, with no sign-up and no daily limits.

Do I need an account?

No. You can use this tool without an account.
